Our wines
This fine wine is made exclusively from grapes grown in the Podere Il Fiore vineyards, just over five hectares (12 acres) of vineyards to yield 30,000 liters of wine per year; in exceptional years, only the best third is used to produce Brunello “Vigna del Fiore.”
In this wine, the typical characteristics of the Brunello, great body intensity, complex and developed aromas, capability for long aging, are stressed. In the “Riserva”, everything is extraordinary, but nothing is excessive. It is a Brunello that respect the character of elegance typical of the Barbi farm, demonstrating at the same time wine of great potency. It is a selection done amongst the best barrels and it is produced only in the best harvests. The aging is of five years of which three in barrels: the refining in a bottle is of at least six months.
This red wine was born from the same grape as that of Brunello, the Sangiovese cultivated in Montalcino, and it comes from those young vineyards that give off those aromatic and elegant wines but it is not so tannic and full-bodied. Even though it will never become a Brunello, it is still however, a great wine of the same family and area, but with an easier approach.
This is the Maremma area’s most classic wine, the finest expression of this region rich in history, culture and landscape. Here the Sangiovese grape is traditionally called Morellino, and as opposed to the rest of Tuscany it is particularly well-rounded and rich in tannin.
The earliest document of the sale of Chianti in the Fattoria dei Barbi archives is dated 1817. Montalcino is part of the territory where Chianti can be produced. Here and in vineyards rented in other areas of Chianti Senese, Fattoria dei Barbi grows the grapes for this wine in order to keep alive a centuries-old tradition.
The Chianti Classico is a traditional Tuscan wine produced according to one of the oldest regulations. Since 1716 The Granduca of Tuscany, Cosimo III, promulgated a decree limiting its area of production. The Chianti Classico produced by the Fattoria dei Barbi is made with 80% Sangiovese and 20% of international red grape varieties as Cabernet and Merlot.
This red wine is the result of years of researches on the fermentation of grapes from Montalcino, done in the Sixties and Seventies by Giovanni Colombini. This wine is very versatile and approachable, ideal as an everyday companion to be shared around a table with family and friends. It is produced mostly with Sangiovese, enhancing the typical fruity aspect of this varietal when it is drunk young.
As the production of Brunello di Montalcino is strictly limited, some of our vineyards of Sangiovese are not within the D.O.C.G. of Brunello. These vineyards are our experimental field for different clones of the same variety and from them we produce the Rosso dei Barbi, an agreeable red table wine, which, in its simplicity, retains the same style of all our wines.
What is “Senza Solfiti” of Fattoria dei Barbi? It is an excellent Sangiovese from Montalcino, vinified with the most advanced oenological competence and ideal for whom is intollerant to sulphites. It is made according with the protocol “without any added chemicals” by Pisa University, a reasearch project started in 2013.
The Colombini Family has been producing Vinsanto since the beginning; in fact the farm preserves a collection which is most probably the largest in the world. From the 1870’s to today, the Vinsanto tradition is kept alive with a couple of thousand bottles a year.
What is grappa? A product obtained from the distillation of vinaccia (marc or pomace), the skins of the grapes after the must has been poured off. The term grappa is exclusive, i.e., it can be applied only to the marc distillate produced in Italy. Grappa di Brunello is another innovation introduced by Fattoria dei Barbi; in 1970 Giovanni Colombini was the first winemaker in Italy to understand grappa’s potential and, to showcase it as it deserved, he decided to distill solely the marc from his prestigious Brunello grapes. The result was Grappa di Brunello: a well-rounded, aromatic, elegant and intense grappa.
This grappa rewards those who know how to wait. It is produced only in exceptionally good years and aged in small oak casks for at least eighteen months before bottling. This patient wait is rewarded by a richly aromatic grappa with a bouquet of herbs and spices. On the palate it is complex, rotund, with a velvety aftertaste.
The Fattoria dei Barbi Extravirgin Olive Oil comes exclusively from our olive groves in Montalcino. It contains 100% Frantoio olives, locally called Correggiolo, the variety best adapted to our terroir. The result is a bright green very spicy oil, powerful, almost peppery. It is perfect with typical Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes and fabulous drizzled fresh on soups, pasta, and on toasted bread to make bruschetta.
