Our wines
The Brunello is made of pure Sangiovese grape, from the XVI Century is one of the greatest Italian wines. In the Fattoria dei Barbi’s cellars are kept almost all the vintages from 1892 till today; many of these bottles were awarded in the XIX, XX and in this present Century. We are one of the most classic expression of the wines from Montalcino.
The Fiore is the most Southern vineyard in the Fattoria dei Barbi estate, in the Southern area of Montalcino’s district. It is a narrow valley with shale soil, here the grapes for the future Brunello Vigna del Fiore ripen perfectly, protected from cold winds and hot Sirocco. The Ribusuoli brook is never sparse of water. The result is a sumptuous Brunello, elegant and complex.
The Brunello Riserva from Fattoria dei Barbi is made only in the vintages that present the extraordinary potential of ageing of Brunello, which can live over one hundred years. We choose the most suitable barrels, more coherent with our style. It is an austere wine, great under every aspect with an extreme elegance.
The Rosso di Montalcino, as the Brunello, is made of pure Sangiovese, but we choose the grapes from our vineyards more apt for an elegant, full bodied wine, rich in aromas and an immediate pleasantness. We let it refine in wood and bottle. This is our way to give birth of the other great classic of Montalcino, the one to be drunk in his youth.
The Morellino is a red wine from Maremma, born from our vineyards located South West from Montalcino. The coastal climate makes it supple, sunny, with soft tannins and lively acidity. It is one of the great Tuscan classics, we use 85% of Sangiovese grapes and 15% of other red grape varieties. The taste is modern, but rooted in the tradition, a very captivating mix.
The earliest document of the sale of Chianti in the Fattoria dei Barbi archives is dated 1817. Montalcino is part of the territory where Chianti can be produced. Here and in vineyards rented in other areas of Chianti Senese, Fattoria dei Barbi grows the grapes for this wine in order to keep alive a centuries-old tradition.
The Chianti Classico is a traditional Tuscan wine produced according to one of the oldest regulations. Since 1716 The Granduca of Tuscany, Cosimo III, promulgated a decree limiting its area of production. The Chianti Classico produced by the Fattoria dei Barbi is made with 80% Sangiovese and 20% of international red grape varieties as Cabernet and Merlot.
In 1969 Giovanni Colombini created this unusual red wine, after researching about ancient Tuscan ways of grape fermentation. Very long macerations revamped a particular red, made to be very refined even when very young, also able to age for long. It is a versatile wine, never excessive; a different approach to the Tuscan taste.
In these variable times, there is no way to forecast precisely the characteristics of the grapes from our many vineyards. Therefore every year we pick the more structured and full bodied Sangiovese for the Brunello, but other grapes are however very good and they make the Rosso dei Barbi, A fresh, immediate and pleasant wine, a good example of the style of Fattoria dei Barbi.
What is “Senza Solfiti” of Fattoria dei Barbi? It is an excellent Sangiovese from Montalcino, vinified with the most advanced oenological competence and ideal for whom is intollerant to sulphites. It is made according with the protocol “without any added chemicals” by Pisa University, a reasearch project started in 2013.
Fattoria dei Barbi produces Vin Santo since 1870, in its cellars you can see bottles of almost every vintage; it is probably the largest collection in Italy. Since centuries we keep alive the tradition of a wine with sensual sweetness; we only make few bottles per vintage, experiencing something almost unique that represents a different Tuscany, rich in aromas and rare.
Our Grappa di Brunello was an innovative gift given by Fattoria dei Barbi to the Italian wine world; in 1972 Giovanni Colombini was the first Italian wine maker to have distilled the pomace from only one varietal, the Sangiovese used for Brunello. The monovarietal grappa was born. Our Grappa di Brunello is soft, intense, aromatic and elegant.
Our Riserva is the natural evolution from our Grappa di Brunello; it is produced only in exceptional vintages, selecting the best pomace from Fattoria dei Barbi. It is aged in oak kegs and later bottled. This patient wait is rewarded by the rich complexity of the aromas. The taste is rounded and full bodied, ending with a supple aftertaste.
Fattoria dei Barbi in Montalcino has only olive trees of the Frantoio varietal, locally called Correggiolo, because it is more suited to the climate and soils of the area. We have plants more than a century old with majestic trunks and younger trees that replaced the ones killed by the frost that this bizarre weather has recently given us. The olive oil is rich, aromatic, a joy for the senses.
